Leave Matt Rhule Alone

I am tired of hearing about Matt Rhule’s extension. It was not new money, and it was not some giant reward. Symbolically, Nebraska backed its coach and that’s it.

Rhule still has to win, and nobody is saying otherwise. But Iowa is not an easy win. Minnesota is not an easy win. The Big Ten is full of teams that can drag you into a fight and beat you if you make mistakes.

Nebraska has gotten better every year under Rhule and that matters. The roster is better. The talent is better. The program feels healthier. Expectations are higher because Nebraska is moving forward.

Is the job finished? No. Do I want more wins? Of course. But improvement does not happen all at once and Nebraska spent years going backward. It was never going to be fixed overnight.

Judge Rhule on the direction of the program. So far, the direction is up.

Leave Matt Rhule alone.

CWS

Omaha has done well to keep the College World Series here. The new stadium is really nice and well attended. The players are always enthusiastic.

Tonight we sat amongst the Oklahoma fans who were the perfect amount of rowdy. I think Nebraska fans and Oklahoma fans miss each other. It certainly feels like there is a strange mutual respect between us.

We parked at the mall and took the bus downtown. It really is the best way to get down there. I try to use the public transportation for sporting events especially in cities I don't know. Park and ride is a brilliant idea in my opinion.

I’m grateful to have been in excellent health today and for the baseball game with my son.

HSA for President

An HSA is more than a debit card for doctor bills.

I prefer contributing through payroll when possible. You can contribute after-tax dollars and claim a deduction later, but qualifying payroll contributions can also avoid Social Security and Medicare taxes. Same account. Better tax treatment.

I also keep part of the HSA in cash. If my deductible is around $2,000, I want about that much available without having to sell investments. That is not an IRS rule. It is simply my way of making sure the HSA can actually cover the risk that comes with a high-deductible plan.

Money above that reserve can be invested for the long term.

There is another useful wrinkle. You can pay a qualified medical expense out of pocket, keep the receipt, and potentially reimburse yourself from the HSA later. That can leave more money invested for longer.

My approach is simple: contribute through payroll, keep the deductible available in cash, invest the rest, and save the receipts.

That is when an HSA starts to look like more than a medical spending account.

March Madness

There have been many events in my life which should have motivated me. Mistakes, jobs, relationships, estrangement, military service. For most of my life my inexperience, immaturity, and stupidity have held me back. I lacked proper guidance as a young man.

In March of 2026, I was given a 30-day sabbatical from work. I spent a lot of time with my son, read, went to the gym, and cleaned my house from top to bottom.

World of Warcraft Anniversary released The Burning Crusade expansion during my leave. This was the expansion that I have always felt the most longing for. I thoroughly enjoyed leveling through it again during my time off. We are currently in Phase Two, raiding TK and SSC. I play an Arcane Mage, Jmonie. It's bittersweet.

Nebraska Basketball.

I love Nebraska Basketball. My earliest Nebrasketball memory is asking my father if twenty wins was good for our basketball team. I was eight or nine years old. He told me it was, and it is. For the purposes of this particular blog, it would be impossible to fully explain the satisfaction this season provided. At some point, my love for Husker athletics will become clear, but it simply cannot be captured in a few paragraphs. Just know that Nebraska's historic season formed part of the backdrop for one of the most memorable months of my life.

Nebraska defeated Troy and Vanderbilt and made it to the Sweet 16.

And so, you have the scene. A 30-day vacation. Reading. Bench pressing. World of Warcraft. Spring break with boy; he's growing up so fast. Nebraska Basketball making the Sweet 16. I cried. I could cry now.

Through speculative trading in the stock market during my time off, I made a little over $50,000. This is not life-altering money in and of itself, but it sparked an awakening.

What should I do with this money? How should it be invested? What are the tax implications? How much time have I wasted?

I learned and incredible amount in the last few months about personal finance from answering these questions.

Today I created this website.

I am not entirely sure where it will lead, but I intend for it to become a daily part of my life in some capacity. Most of the topics will likely revolve around finance, sports, fatherhood and whatever else experience places in my path.

The world is a savage place. Sometimes you don't even realize you're in a fight until you've lost.

I’m going to share things that I've learned and my opinions.
